I’m a wannabe wino, what can I say?

I really can’t even pretend that I’m a wine connoisseur of any sort (although I wish I was, I recently read an article about sommeliers making over $150k yearly - jeez), but I do thoroughly enjoy a good glass of Merlot or Beaujolais from time to time. Lately, I’ve been thinking about trying to learn a bit more about wines & training my palate a bit more to recognize all the unique flavors that makes each wine different. I’ve thrown wine parties before, but it was more just because I needed a change of pace from all the college campus beer-beer-beer parties I usually frequent.

To be completely honest, part of my desire to become more well-versed in wines is so I can have an excuse to go shopping for wine racks - I’ve always liked the aesthetic of the dark wooden wine racks that I see in stores. It really fits in with the personal sense of style that my dream home would embody: all dark, luxe woods and clean, sophisticated lines. Like a posh ski lodge, basically. I would really love a few of these style racks in a dark, mahogany stain. Of course, they’d probably be stocked with wines that are nowhere near extravagant (hello, Charles Shaw is awesome), but at least they’d LOOK amazing.

I am SO imagining finishing my basement right now and using the little alcove beneath the stairs as a miniature wine cellar right now.

Special Edition Kit Kat Candy Bars @ J-List

If you know me at all, you know that I completely adore “limited edition” flavors of regular food & drink. When Mountain Dew put out their Halo 3 inspired soda called “Gamer Fuel”, I immediately picked it up and loved it. Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper? Of course. The New York Cheesecake Hershey’s Kisses? Check. Strawberry Milkshake Whoppers? Absolutely. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when I stumbled upon J-List and their huge category of unique japanese snacks.

After some deliberation, I’ve decided on ordering some of their limited edition & Japan-exclusive flavors of one of my favorite types of candy bar: the Kit Kat. It’s been a staple of mine since childhood, and it seems that over in Asia, there’s a never-ending stream of permutations when it comes to Kit Kat flavors. As of now, J-List is offering three absolutely irresistible varieties: Green Tea, Sakura (aka cherry blossom), and Strawberry. I can’t even pick which flavor I’m the most excited to try - they all sound absolutely incredible. I tend to have a weakness for anything pink, so both the Strawberry and Sakura flavors have an edge, at least visually, for me.

So what about y’all, lovely readers? What are some of the craziest limited edition or foreign varieties of “normal” foods and beverages that you’ve eaten? I’m always up for trying new “weird” flavors, so feel free to recommend away in the comment section! Also, are there any other Japanese must-have snacks that I should add to my J-List order? I’ve sadly never traveled beyond North America, but I always enjoy trying foreign foods as much as possible. Variety really is the spice of life!

Freeze-Dried Astronaut Ice Cream

Science museums are really cool places with tons of wonderful learning experiences available to the public. You can walk through giant heart models, see dazzling laser displays, even gape at actual moon landers. But let’s face it, the best part of every science museum is normally in a bin near the cash register: freeze dried ice cream. Four of the tastiest words in the English language. But thanks to ThinkGeek.com, you can now get the ice cream astronauts eat without the risk of accidentally learning anything. Yay!ThinkGeek.com sells the famous freeze-dried ice cream at $2.99 a pop, and offers three flavor choices: Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and my personal favorite, Neopolitan. Space age strawberry is just so delicious! You also get 50 “Geek Points” for each ice cream bar that you buy, which adds up quickly (the geek points are redeemable for some seriously cool things, including the USB Snowbot which is now sitting on my desktop thanks to Geek Points - but that’s another day, another post).

If this post has you feeling nostalgic or hungry, head on over to ThinkGeek.com and grab you some delicious yummy food technology!
